ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A man died days after being ejected and critically injured in a crash involving a stolen Jeep. Now, his friend is facing a vehicular homicide charge, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. on Feb. 10 on 20th Street South in the Melrose-Mercy area of St. Pete not far from John Hopkins Middle School.
Police say 22-year-old Ke'Andrae Davis stole a gray Jeep Cherokee and sped southbound down 20th Street. Before taking off, however, police say Davis' friend, 20-year-old Vincent Green, jumped onto the back of the Jeep.
Not long after Davis sped off down the street, he reportedly lost control of the Jeep, causing it to swerve and flip. In the process, Green was thrown from the back of the vehicle, leaving him with serious injuries.
After the crash, police say Davis climbed out of the Jeep and left the area before officers got to the crash site. Green was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
On Feb. 14, Davis was found and arrested by police, the agency said. He was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, reckless driving with serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, felon in possession of a firearm, tampering with a witness, resisting an officer without violence and not having a valid driver's license.
Nine days after the crash, on Monday, Feb. 19, Green died from his injuries.
On Tuesday, St. Pete police sent a release stating Davis now faces an additional charge of vehicular homicide.
