ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Holiday events in the city of St. Petersburg kicked off Saturday with thousands of people in attendance.
The city held its annual Santa parade and Christmas tree lighting; the 95th event of its kind. Mayor Ken Welch, along with members of the St. Pete City Council, helped count down the tree lighting at North Staub Park.
"This is what St. Pete is all about, isn't it? We come together as a family, as a community and it's really a great time," Welch told the crowd.
The parade started from Albert Whitted Park and ran along Bayshore Drive to 5th Avenue Northeast. Floats with dazzling displays of lights, performers and no shortage of beads and candy made up this year's parade. From the North Pole to North Straub Park, Santa Claus concluded the end of the parade.
"It's just like a special little moment. I'll never forget this day," said Jessica Murati, who took part in the parade.
Traditional holiday songs were also performed at the park, which only brought the crowds to their feet.
The city will next host Snowfest from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2. Toboggan slides, inflatables, arts and crafts tents and food trucks will be available for families to enjoy.
A movie in the park will also take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at Crescent Lake Park.
