WATCH: St. Pete officers rescue man from burning house

An officer entered the house twice to find the man in his bedroom before removing his window to pull him out of the house.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Petersburg Police officers rescued a man from his house after detecting smoke and hearing his cries for help, according to a news release.

The department said it received a hang-up call Tuesday night near Paris Avenue South and 6th Street South. Officers Tyler Martnick and Zharia Smith responded to search the area when they heard a man crying for help and smelled smoke.

The officers found a man trapped in a bedroom in a house that was on fire. Martnick entered the house twice to try to find his bedroom but had to leave because of the heat and smoke.

Both officers then decided to remove his bedroom window frame from the outside, which allowed them to successfully pull him out of the house.

The man suffered severe cuts and burns and was brought to a nearby hospital for treatment, the police department said.
