ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — One man is hospitalized in critical condition after a crash that shut down a busy road connecting to I-275 in St. Petersburg on Thursday morning.
It happened on 28th Street South near the I-275 overpass during the morning commute. A Dodge pickup truck was trying to make a left onto the interstate and collided with a BMW 328xi sedan that was in the median, St. Petersburg police said. The 39-year-old man driving the BMW then crashed into a concrete pillar under the overpass.
He was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The 35-year-old driver of the Dodge pickup was transported in stable condition.
All lanes of 28th Street South, as well as the I-275 ramp, were shut down following the crash but have since reopened.
Sky 10 flew over the area, showing a truck and a sedan with significant damage. The sedan was pushed off the road during the crash and ended up just out from under the I-275 overpass.
