ST. PETE BEACH, Fla — In St. Pete Beach, the city estimates that the number of homes and businesses that need some level of repair or rebuilding after Hurricane Helene is in the thousands.
Not only are structures damaged, but there are health risks, too.
Water contamination, mold growth, and carbon monoxide poisoning from improper generator use are all of concern.
"Addressing these risks is crucial for protecting our residents and ensuring a safe recovery," city officials said in a press release. "The [Community Development Department] recognizes that extraordinary measures need to be taken to accommodate the community’s needs and expedite the department’s operations."
That's why the city is putting resources behind providing residents and businesses with expanded operating hours, expedited permitting, limited mobile parking and an increased presence of code enforcement on weekends. Code enforcement will be on hand to arm businesses and residents with knowledge of "unfair, illegal, and dangerous activities."
