ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A homicide investigation is underway after a 74-year-old was found dead inside his St. Petersburg home.
"We received a 911 emergency call from relatives who had gone to the house and determined that Mr. Moore was unconscious and unresponsive," Ken Knight, spokesperson with the St. Petersburg Police Department, said.
Julius Moore was discovered by relatives at his home in the area of 19th Avenue South and 10th Street South, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department. Investigators say after they were able to get a warrant later in the day to enter the house, it was realized Moore had been shot.
"Our officers went in, saw the place and said that the death looked suspicious to them, so they backed out of the house to get a search warrant," Knight said.
That warrant was obtained late Sunday evening. Officers processed the scene into the afternoon Monday. Detectives say Moore was only shot once.
"It appears to be from what I understand a single gunshot wound to the head," Knight said.
Moore's family was too emotional to go on camera Monday, but shared a photo of a man they say was wonderful and "taken too soon."
St. Pete police say a man who is known to Moore was found by the Tampa Police Department and detained him Monday, but so far no arrests have been made. The man detained is someone investigators were looking to talk to in connection to the suspicious death.
"Tampa police were able to locate this gentleman and detain him," Knight said.
While the family is working to try and fund a funeral for the 74-year-old with this GoFundMe, police ask anyone with information to contact St. Pete Police at 727-893-7780 or text SPPD and the tip to TIP411.
