LARGO, Fla. — Pinellas County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a Largo couple after their 17-month-old child died from an oxycodone overdose back in March of last year.
After a lengthy investigation, Adela Allen, 43, and Kyle Allen, 44, were arrested after both provided inconsistent statements to deputies, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
The investigation reportedly began on March 9, 2023 when deputies responded to a home in Largo on reports of a deceased child. Investigators said the child was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said in the release.
Numerous substances, including oxycodone and Xanax, were found inside the bedroom, according to deputies.
The sheriff's office said initial interviews saw Adela providing inconsistent statements and Kyle telling investigators he was away from the home at the time of the child's death.
As the investigation continued, detectives were able to determine the child's cause of death as oxycodone toxicity, according to the release. They also reportedly discovered neither Adela nor Kyle had a prescription for the drug.
A year later on Friday, June 7, detectives re-interviewed the couple, with Kyle admitting to selling narcotics provided to him by Adela.
Adela denied knowing any drugs were in the house but was reportedly arrested and charged with neglect of a child and several counts of drug possession. Kyle was arrested for unlawful use of a two-way communication device and conspiracy, deputies said in the release.
Both were reportedly taken to Pinellas County Jail without incident.
