CLEARWATER, Fla. – A Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy accused of using the N-word and creating a racially hostile work environment was fired Friday.

Jorge A. Lopez, 30, worked as a detention deputy in a maximum-security housing area of the Pinellas County Jail.

Investigators said Lopez repeatedly used the N-word to refer to the inmates when speaking with another co-worker last weekend. Lopez continued to use the inappropriate language even after other deputies told him to stop, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lopez admitted to the allegations and admitted to using racial slurs while working at the jail prior to the incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
