Brother of St. Pete man hit and killed by car arrested for his murder

Police say Tyree Gland ran into his brother, Taiwan Gland, Sr., with a car twice before leaving the scene.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The brother of a St. Petersburg man hit and killed by a car has been arrested on first-degree murder charges in connection to his death.

Police say 34-year-old Tyree Gland intentionally drove his car into his brother two times along 7th Avenue South on Monday before leaving the area. His brother, 35-year-old Taiwan Gland, Sr. was later pronounced dead at the scene when officers responded around 2:30 a.m.

Just days before, Taiwan Gland's son was killed in a shooting.

Officials have not mentioned a potential motive and have not said if the two deaths are connected.

Family and friends who were at the crime scene on Monday said Taiwan Gland, Sr. had been in the area to attend a vigil for his son, Taiwan Gland, Jr., who was shot and killed on Feb. 23 outside Citrus Groves Apartments just blocks away. No arrests have been made in that case.

St. Petersburg police arrested and charged the passenger, Sebastian Williams, who was in the car with 34-year-old Tyree Gland at the time of the murder.

Gland was last seen driving a dark blue 2018 Cadillac ATS. The tag reads AT21AH.

Records from the Florida Department of Corrections show Tyree Gland had been released from prison in December 2023 after serving a 13-year sentence on charges of manslaughter and illegal possession of a firearm.
