LARGO, Fla. — Two firefighters were hospitalized Friday morning in Largo after reports of a gas leak lead crews to battle a restaurant fire.
It happened just before 8 a.m. when Largo Fire Rescue was called to the Westside Center on Walsingham Road after getting reports of a possible gas leak; it's where a BayCare Urgent Care and several restaurants reside.
When crews arrived, they evacuated people in the plaza and "secured gas to the structure." As they were there, crews said they found an active fire at one of the restaurants in the plaza.
Fire crews were able to put out the fire, but two firefighters sustained injuries during the call. Fire Rescue did not specify how the firefighters were hurt but said both were taken to the hospital for treatment.
As of this writing, one firefighter has been released from the hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, crews said.
