Deputies believe alcohol was a factor in deadly Lake Tarpon boat crash

Deputies believe the man's boat struck a dock, throwing him from the vessel.

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Deputies responded Monday afternoon to Lake Tarpon where a body was found.

Detectives identified the man as 50-year-old Mark Mayer, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said in an update.  Authorities say Mayer left his home at around 7 p.m. Sunday in his 19-foot Tracker boat and did not return home. That's when his family reported him missing.

At around 11:30 a.m., law enforcement found Mayer and his boat, which looked to have struck the dock located at 3723 Mullenhurst Drive in Palm Harbor, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Sky10 flew over the scene as investigation efforts appeared to center around a motor boat, which had some damage. The boat has since been removed and towed away.

Deputies believe when the boat hit the dock, Mayer was thrown from the vessel. At this time, they also believe alcohol was a factor in the fatal crash.
