ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The St. Petersburg Museum of History is getting an exhibit of award-winning photography that spotlights a brutal conflict during the Cold War era.

"The Forgotten War: Korea 1950" opens Friday and is comprised of 36 images from award-winning photographer Max Desfor. The exhibit also includes the image that won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1951: "Flight of Refugees Across Wrecked Bridge."

Desfor died in February at age 104. He was a wire service photographer during World War II, and he photographed the Enola Gay's crew upon their Saipan landing after dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He also captured on film Japan's official surrender aboard the USS Missouri.

And during the Korean War, Desfor was there in June 1950, when American forces were dispatched to South Korea following an invasion by North Korea, which was supported by China and the Soviet Union.

American forces were nearly defeated during the first two months of the war. But during an amphibious assault at Incheon, American forces began the march to retake Seoul.

The St. Petersburg Museum of History is the only Florida stop for this exhibit. When it leaves St. Petersburg at the end of the year, it'll travel to the Truman presidential library.
