PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — The free test period allowing drivers to commute roads on Gateway Expressway ended today, a week after it welcomed Tampa Bay-area commuters to its lanes.
Starting from noon Friday, toll collections will begin on State Roads 686A and 690, as well as on the freeway’s express lanes all leading into Interstate 275.
Here is the full list of toll roads and their amounts, per the Florida Department of Transportation:
SR 690: $0.86 — This four-lane road connects U.S. 19 to the west of I-275. The road was built in the median of 118th Avenue North.
SR 686A: $0.86 — This four-lane road runs from the Bayside Bridge to just west of I-275. Most of the road was built in the median of Roosevelt Boulevard and Ulmerton Road.
To note: Drivers who use the westbound bypass on SR 686A at St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport (PIE) will be charged a $0.28 toll.
Express lanes: $0.50 — One express lane was added in each direction on I-275 from south of Gandy Boulevard to 4th Street North.
Keep in mind that tolls on SR 686A and SR 690 will be collected electronically via the SunPass Prepaid Toll Program or through TOLL-BY-PLATE. However, tolls on I-275 express lanes will be collected electronically via the SunPass Prepaid Toll Program only.
All vehicles are allowed on SR 686A and SR 690 tolls, while only passenger vehicles, registered vanpools, and buses are allowed in the I-275 express lanes.
The department also says those who enter the express lanes without a SunPass are subject to a $25 daily violation charge.
The expressway was built to ease congestion on local roads and provide more travel route options to Tampa Bay drivers.
