ST PETERSBURG, Russia — A 57-year-old St. Petersburg man died after getting hit by a car while riding a bike Thursday on Gandy Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

It happened just before 5:15 p.m. at Gandy Boulevard and Brighton Bay Boulevard, prompting authorities to shut down the eastbound lanes of Gandy for hours during rush hour.

Troopers say the bicyclist was hit when he rode his bike into the path of an oncoming car going east on Gandy. The bicyclist was thrown from his bike, which was then hit by another vehicle.
