Crews handle garbage fire outside St. Pete church

Firefighters on the scene spotted flames at Rock of Jesus Missionary Baptist Church.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Petersburg Fire Rescue crews responded to Rock of Jesus Missionary Baptist Church after a fire broke out late Wednesday night.

Firefighters said they were called just after 10 p.m. to the church on 18th Avenue South near 40th Street. They arrived to find flames coming through one of the windows in the building.

The church's senior pastor, Former State Rep Frank Peterman, told 10 Tampa Bay he was on his way to the church on Wednesday night after he was alerted by the fire department.

As of Thursday morning, St. Pete Fire Rescue said the fire actually happened in a garbage can outside the church. Crews were able to put out the flames before the fire could affect the building.

No one was hurt in the fire. There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
