ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — An electric golf cart burst into flames Saturday afternoon, nearly spreading its blaze to the owner's St. Pete home just a few feet away, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue said in a Facebook post.

The cart was reportedly charging in the driveway of the home before it caught fire. Neighbors were able to warn homeowners of the fire and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, according to Fire Rescue.

While the cause of the fire is under investigation, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue says residents should know the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, commonly used for golf carts and e-bikes.

"These batteries can pose serious fire hazards, especially if damaged, overcharged, or exposed to extreme temperatures," Fire Rescue stated in the post.
