St. Pete police: Woman shot, killed after pointing gun at deputies

The shooting happened in the area of 46th Avenue North and 74th Street North.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A St. Petersburg woman was shot early Saturday morning after pointing a gun at Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies, authorities say.

The shooting happened around 8:55 a.m. in the Sunshine Mobile Home Park located in the area of 46th Avenue North and 74th Street North, St. Pete Chief of Police Anthony Holloway during a news conference.

Holloway said deputies were initially called to the area because of a neighborhood dispute.

When deputies arrived, they spoke to a person involved in the argument and then tried to speak to the homeowner – who was identified as 54-year-old Samantha Belk, authorities say.

The chief said Belk tried to kick down her neighbor's door because she was looking for the neighbor's wife.

The chief said when deputies arrived in the area, they tried to make contact with Belk by going to her house and identifying themselves through the door. It's reported Belk used profanity instead and at some point told deputies that she was going to get a gun.

Holloway said the deputies went back to their patrol vehicles and the 54-year-old woman came out of the house with a gun.

It's reported that the deputies told the woman to drop the gun, but instead, she pointed it at them, promoting one of the deputies to shoot.

Paramedics with the Lealman Fire Rescue began providing treatment to Belk and took her to Northside Hospital, but she was later pronounced dead, law enforcement says.

Officials say the deputy who fired the gun has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation while the other two deputies who did not shoot will remain on duty.

The investigation of the incident remains ongoing.
