Pinellas County deputy fired after DUI, sheriff's office says

Deputies say Rickey Rodgers was seen by Clearwater police around 2:17 a.m. running a red light at Belcher road and Gulf to Bay Boulevard.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — An off-duty Pinellas County deputy was arrested and later fired for driving under the influence early Wednesday morning in Clearwater, according to the sheriff's office.

Rickey Rodgers, 45, who has been with the sheriff's office since 2004, was seen by Clearwater police around 2:17 a.m. running a red light at Belcher Road and Gulf to Bay Boulevard in his Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, deputies said.

Rodgers showed signs of impairment by having an odor of an alcoholic beverage, slurred speech and watery and glossy eyes, authorities detailed.

The sheriff's office said Rogers agreed to perform field sobriety tests but did poorly. He also refused to submit a breath sample.

Rogers was arrested, charged with one count of driving under the influence and taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

Rogers worked in the patrol operations bureau with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office but was immediately fired following his arrest, which is consistent with the sheriff's office policy.
