Coast Guard rescues 5 people in Tampa Bay waters Saturday

Crews responded to two separate calls within three hours.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) crews made five rescues in under three hours Saturday, according to a news release.

Crews in St. Petersburg received the first distress call just after 11 a.m., when four men aboard a 24-foot boat reported they were sinking near the Gandy Bridge.

USCG arrived on scene and found all four men next to the vessel, which had run aground and was partially submerged. The men were transported to the Gandy Boat Ramp with no reported injuries.

The boat owner is working to have the vessel recovered, USCG said.

Just two hours later, a call from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office reported a woman on a personal watercraft near Shell Key had suffered a head injury.

A boat crew with Station St. Petersburg, as well as crews with Tierra Verde and St. Petersburg Fire Rescues, responded and located the injured woman.

First aid was administered and the woman was later transported to EMS to receive a higher level of care.
