MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — A man was critically injured after he was shot with a speargun on the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Coast Guard.
Crews with Air Station Clearwater and Station Sand Key responded to the man around 4 p.m. Thursday about 20 miles off Johns Pass in Madeira Beach.
The service branch tweeted its crewmembers helped to medevac the man who somehow was shot with the speargun. It remains unclear how the incident happened.
Some published video shows the man being lifted from a boat and into a Coast Guard helicopter.
He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, the Coast Guard said.
