CLEARWATER, Fla. — A man from Clearwater is dead after he crashed through a traffic barrier Friday afternoon in Alligator Alley, authorities say.
The man, who was 60 years old, lost control of the car he was driving before the crash occurred, according to a statement from the Florida Highway Patrol retrieved by CBS Miami.
At around 1:05 p.m., the Clearwater man was heading westbound on Interstate 75 and leaving mile marker 74, CBS Miami reports. He then lost control of his car and drove southwesterly out of the westbound lanes and onto the grassy median.
WPLG-TV says the man's uncontrolled car continued on and hit a bridge guardrail and then collided with the side of the eastbound bridge wall.
The Palm Harbor Fire Rescue fire commissioner told WPLG-TV that the man's car landed under the bridge, which was about 30 feet below the overpass.
The 60-year-old was reportedly airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center for medical treatment, but he later died due to his injuries.
The Clearwater man was wearing his seatbelt during the crash, according to WPLG-TV.
The investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
