CLEARWATER, Fla. — A man from Tampa was arrested on Friday after police say he tried to carjack someone at a gas station.

The attempted carjacking happened late Thursday, just before midnight, at an On The Fly gas station off Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard in Clearwater.

A driver was pumping gas when the man asked for a ride to Tampa. When the driver said no, the man "tried to get into the car and a fight ensued," police explained in a press release.

The attempted carjacker, identified by police as 44-year-old Brian L. Davis, is accused of using a "large piece of metal" as a weapon during the fight.

The driver's friend then exited the gas station and tried to defend the driver. That's when Davis allegedly pulled out a knife.

Police arrived soon after and arrested Davis, who's facing an armed carjacking charge, as well as charges of aggravated assault and criminal mischief.

The driver was said to have sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene.
