Fire officials: Car crashes into building and catches fire in St. Petersburg

Fire officials said the driver sustained injuries during the incident, but their current condition is unknown.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A vehicle caught fire after crashing into a building in St. Petersburg Saturday night, fire officials said.

It happened around 10 p.m. off of 30th Avenue North. That's when St. Petersburg Fire Rescue said they received multiple calls of a vehicle that struck a building. Witnesses reported hearing explosions and seeing flames. 

After arriving on scene, crews determined the fire was isolated to the vehicle and the the flames did not spread to the inside of the building. They were able to contain the flames within 30 minutes.

Thankfully, no on was inside the building at the time.

Officials said the driver initially fled the scene. Within a couple of minutes, they received a call from the driver needing help due to injuries sustained during the accident.

The St. Petersburg Police Department and fire paramedics located the driver at a home four blocks away.

“It appears the driver lost control on a curve and crashed into the side of the building,” SPFR officials said in a statement.

The driver's current condition is unknown.

No further details were released.
