Artists working to restore damaged mural in downtown Gulfport

The Gulfport Police Department said it's looking into what caused the mural to be damaged.

GULFPORT, Fla. — Gulfport is a very vibrant and artsy community, so when people saw that a mural was possibly vandalized, they really took it personally.

"Oh my gosh! It just broke my heart," a local resident said. "It broke my heart because we'd been out here almost every other day admiring how awesome it is."

Local artists are working to restore a mural after someone destroyed it last week, covering it with grey paint.

RSK Murals said weeks of work were ruined.

"We thought we were going to be done this week and it's been a big setback," Zac Schafer said. "This might end up pushing somethings back."

Artists said it's going to take a couple of days to repaint each dog. The group is working on this piece along with several other projects at Stormrunners Tavern.

Chris Falls works as a managing partner with the new dog-friendly bar and grill planning to open in April.

"It became so beloved so quick and it was such great work," Falls said.

They hired RSK Murals to help bring some color to the space and they're adding more security cameras to help deter vandals.

"We're not going to let somebody come in and just deface the property and just throw our hands up," Falls said.

RSK said they're not just redoing for themselves but for the community.

"We're going to do it even better than before," Schafer said.

This time around, they are leaving the last two panels blank for the community to leave their mark.

The Gulfport Police Department said it's looking into what caused the mural to be damaged.
