Man shoots 12-year-old before taking off in Largo, deputies say

The man was shooting at another man and hit the 12-year-old who stood nearby, deputies said.

LARGO, Fla. — A man is in custody Sunday after he allegedly shot a 12-year-old boy in Largo Friday night before taking off, deputies said.

Officials said Yancy Crowder, 31, was in front of a house on Verona Avenue when he shot at Calvert Hart, 31, multiple times for unknown reasons at around 6:34 p.m. They said as Hart tried to leave in his car, Crowder continued to shoot at him.

The 12-year-old, who stood in a nearby front yard, was standing in Crowder's direction when he was shot.

Crowder and Hart left the scene before deputies arrived, and the boy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies arrested Crowder on three felony warrants at a house in Zephyrhills on Saturday. He admitted that he was at the Largo house when the incident occurred but denied having a gun or hearing gunshots, according to deputies.
