LARGO, Fla. -- A Pinellas County Jail inmate died Tuesday nearly a month after being injured by a fellow inmate.

According to the sheriff's office, on Jun. 18, 53-year-old James Mills and 41-year-old Charles Allen were arguing over a television remote while being housed in the same holding area.

Detectives said Allen struck Mills in the face once with his hand, and witnesses said Mills fell and hit his head on the concrete floor. Mills was taken to Northside Hospital for his injuries. Detectives said they got surveillance video that showed Allen striking Mills.

Detectives said Mills' condition worsened after he was transferred to Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg, and he died Tuesday evening. The medical examiner's office is going to conduct an autopsy to officially confirm the cause of death.

Allen was originally arrested by Clearwater police in December and charged with possession of powder cocaine, sale and delivery of powder cocaine, violation of probation and two charges of first-degree murder.

Mills was originally arrested by the Pinellas County Sheriff's on June 12 and charged with failure to register as a sex offender, failure to obtain/update sex offender ID and two Hillsborough warrants for failure to register as a sex offender and failure to report name or residence.

Detectives said additional charges are possible once their investigation is finished.
