Some red light cameras being removed in New Port Richey

Take a picture. It will last longer than four of the red light cameras on U.S. 19 in New Port Richey.

At midnight on Monday, the lights southbound 19 at Marine Parkway and Main Street, as well as north and southbound at Cross Bayou Boulevard.

The cameras at Trouble Creek, northbound Floramar Terrace, north and southbound Gulf Drive and the westbound lanes of Main Street onto U.S. 19.

The City Council giving the green light to take down the red light cameras as they aren't catching as many as they used to. Numbers gathered by 10News WTSP show the decline started as soon as 10Investigates dug into the shortening of yellow lights. As soon as the state changed the rules and started lengthening the lights, the number of violations dropped drastically. The cameras cost the city tens of thousands of dollars to operate every year.

The remaining five cameras will stay on for at least another year, as the city resigned a contract with the camera company.
