The old Sun West Mine, given to Pasco County 1986, is finally getting new life.
"From the far side of the lake all the way down through here is all beach, " Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano says a mile beach and enough sand to make 40 beach volleyball courts, that are already attracting interest.
"The AVP tour wants to come here in September and bring 8,000 participants to play in a beach volleyball tournament here," Mariano says.
Also getting attention, a 70-acre lake which will house a wakeboard park with the latest technology.
"Well, the Red Bull Open they would love to run an event right here having the whole thing right here in Pasco County so that international attention we could bring to Pasco County," explains Mariano.
Also included is a ropes course over the water, aqua park inflatables, and a zip line with a boardwalk. Everything included, Mariano says this is big for the area.
"All the area around it land values go up. And when land values go up, more investment happens. This would probably be the biggest economic impact or tourism impact the county could ever do."
Mariano says he also needs funding for the boardwalk and a parking lot, but he hopes to have a soft open on July 4 with a party and fireworks on the lake.
The contracts for the wakeboard park should be finalized soon which will then go before the board of commissioners for a vote.
