Police: Driver arrested in New Port Richey hit-and-run involving 11-year-old riding a bike

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A driver was arrested after police say he hit an 11-year-old riding a bicycle Wednesday morning.

The New Port Richey Police Department says 77-year-old Richard McCafferty hit the young girl with a small red car, possibly a Hyundai, at around 7 a.m. at the intersection of Van Buren Street and Indiana Avenue.

In a Facebook post, police initially asked for the public's help in finding McCafferty. At around 3:30 p.m., the department confirmed he was found.

The 11-year-old reportedly suffered minor injuries, and there was minimal damage to her bicycle.

McCafferty was taken to the Pasco County Corrections Department. He is being charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury.
