NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A 24-year-old man is believed to have been driving impaired when he crashed his car overnight on U.S. Highway 19 and Grand Boulevard, according to police.
Officers responded to the intersection at around 1 a.m. Friday and found the man stuck in his wrecked and overturned car, the New Port Richey Police Department said. He was taken to HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital with serious injuries after rescuers extricated him.
Police say the man was likely speeding southbound on U.S. 19 when he lost control of his car while trying to pass other vehicles stopped at the red light. His car hit the curb, causing it to crash into a concrete pole, spin and roll onto its top.
"At this point in the investigation, there appear to be indications of possible driver impairment," police said in a statement.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Police partially shut down the intersection while responding to the crash.
