DALLAS — Getting through high school can be tough for some teenagers but navigating it without a family can feel impossible for children in the foster care system.
Today's Wednesday's Child is 14-year-old Charlie, who hopes a forever family will adopt him this summer so that he can begin his sophomore year with the love and support he desires.
An adventure at the Dallas World Aquarium quickly turned into the brightest of days for Charlie. He got to see colorful and rare animals from all over the world.
His favorites were the sharks, crocodiles, and eagles.
"I'm feeling good today because today was one of the best days I've ever had," he said.
Charlie says his freshman year has been extra tough because he needed the reassurance and guidance of a supportive family.
"I want people to see me very much," Charlie said. "I'm a special kid that needs special parenting and adoption."
Charlie uses that word a lot. Adoption.
"I'm a guy that's actually trying to get adopted," he said thoughtfully.
Not being adopted is a heavy burden for a child who wants to be seen and adored.
"I really need people to help me smile," he said honestly.
Right now, superheroes make him smile. He's a Marvel guy.
"My favorite superhero is Ironman."
Charlie has superhero strength simply by holding on to hope. He dreams about starting his sophomore year in high school with the promise of loving parents who will help him smile by literally telling him they care.
"You're the most specialist child I ever had. I want you to have a good life and more. I will always be by your side until the very end. See what you become in life," he said about the words of encouragement he wants from a parent.
Charlie smiles at the hope and possibility of having a loving forever family. He is ready to give them his heart and knows without a doubt that his adoptive mom will always remind him he matters.
"That you're a special boy and you deserve better," he said.
