Mayor Buckhorn looking into South Tampa parking issue

As 10 News first uncovered, when cars park so close together on these narrow streets, it slows down first responders immensely. We took your concerns to Mayor Bob Buckhorn, showed him the video and asked him what can be done about it.

Residents say parking has become such a problem in South Tampa, vehicles are blocking driveways and emergency vehicles from getting through the narrow residential streets.

Just outside of Nell Abram's front window on Dekle Avenue in South Tampa is something you'll see all across the area.

"They park and they block my driveway and they block my neighbor's driveway," she says.

Cars line both sides of the narrow streets and it has people concerned for their safety.

"We had a medical emergency at this home here just a few months back and the ambulance, the paramedics the fire trucks weren't able to get up the street. They came around and came down the wrong way," says Abram.

As 10News WTSP first uncovered, when cars park so close together on these narrow streets, it slows down first responders immensely. We took your concerns to Mayor Bob Buckhorn, showed him the video, and asked him what can be done about it.

"I don't know the answer to that question," he says. "Streets in the South Tampa district tend to be more narrow anyway. There may be ways where we can encourage parking on one side allowing emergency vehicles access on the other."

But, for a lot of those residents, their homes were built with small driveways. If they have more than one or two cars, it can be difficult to find decent parking where they are out of the way.

"Unfortunately for many of those folks, they own more than one vehicle they don't have anywhere else to park, so if they own a vehicle, where do they park?" says Tampa Fire Chief Tom Forward.

He says a city ordinance may not be the best solution for this.

Mayor Buckhorn says, "It's absolutely something we ought to look at."

Both agree, you should be aware when you park. Always making sure you're not blocking the path of those working to save someone's life.
