Detectives still searching for suspect in Sunshine Skyway fishing pier murder

$5,000 reward money is still available for information on 34-year-old Alex Martinez, who has been eluding police for more than a year and a half.

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — A year and a half after a man was gunned down at the Sunshine Skyway fishing pier, authorities still haven't been able to find the suspected killer, Alex Martinez.

The 34-year-old suspect is believed to be hiding in the Plant City area of Hillsborough County, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Thursday afternoon to help remind the public about the case.

Detectives are looking to bring Martinez in on a warrant for felony murder with a firearm, officials said. On top of that, the Gold Star Club of Manatee County is still offering $5,000 for information leading up to Martinez's arrest, according to the sheriff's office.

The shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Oct. 14, 2022. The victim, 26-year-old Diomicio Primitivo Ibarra-Hernandez was found dead inside a car after multiple people reported hearing several gunshots and seeing another car drive away.

In a previous statement, the sheriff's office described the shooting as a "targeted attack."

Martinez was identified as the suspect in the case back in December 2023. He met with Hernandez on the pier to buy "a large quantity of marijuana" before shots were fired, detectives said in another news release.

Anyone with information on the case or Martinez's whereabouts can call the sheriff's office at 941-747-3011. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Manatee County Crime Stoppers at 866-634-8477 (TIPS) or online.
