MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — An 18-year-old from Bradenton was arrested after troopers say he hit a pedestrian and then didn't stay at the deadly crash site.
It happened around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 41 (14th Street West) and 66th Avenue West in Manatee County. The 18-year-old was driving north on U.S. 41 in the middle lane in his SUV, approaching 63rd Avenue West.
As he was driving, a 62-year-old man from Sacramento, California, was walking alongside his bicycle going west on U.S. 41 and entered the northbound lanes.
That's when the front right of the SUV hit the pedestrian and his bicycle. He died at the scene.
According to troopers, the 18-year-old "initially" stopped his SUV and "briefly checked" on the man before driving away. He and his 17-year-old passenger were not hurt in the collision.
After a little while, the 18-year-old driver returned to the crash site and was then arrested for leaving a crash scene involving death. He was booked into the Manatee County Jail.
Troopers say the crash is still under investigation.
