NEWPORT, R.I. — A Bradenton native became a U.S. Navy supply officer in grand fashion last week, earning an award for her performance at the Naval Supply Corps School in Rhode Island.

Ensign Vanessa Alvarez received the Navy League Honor, Courage, Commitment Award after completing a course at the Naval Supply Corps School Friday in Rhode Island, according to a release.

Alvarez, who has served in the navy for thirteen years, graduated from the Basic Qualification Course, a rigorous course needed to obtain “extraordinary achievement” at the school, the release said. Navy supply officers are considered to be one of the Navy's "greatest assets."

Before receiving the award, Alvarez graduated from Bayshore High School in 2005 and then attended and graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 2009.

“I am most appreciative to be chosen for an award that holds true to the Navy Core Values and that I can be an example of what right looks like,” Alvarez said in a statement. “I hope that I can continue to make my sailors and peers proud and inspire them to set the standard.”

Equipped with the knowledge to “provide global logistics support,” a navy supply officer’s main responsibility is to “make sure the Navy has what it needs, when it needs it,” according to America’s Navy website. "Navy supply officers ensure sailors have the tools and equipment they need to deter any threat and maintain warfighting readiness."

Alvarez has been assigned to serve with USS Nebraska, homeported in Bangor, Washington.
