BRADENTON, Fla. — Bradenton extended a precautionary boil water notice after a citywide water outage happened over the weekend.
Bradenton Police said 911 dispatchers and their non-emergency line received many calls about the outage that was caused by a power outage at the city's water treatment plant. It resulted in widespread low pressure and outages on Sunday morning, according to a post by police.
Power has been fully restored to the Bradenton Water Treatment Plant, according to a release from city officials.
"The City of Bradenton extends its sincere gratitude to Florida Power & Light for their hard work and dedication in assisting us to restore power," officials said in the release. "Their prompt and effective response was crucial in resolving this situation.
The notice is in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to officials. The city says while potable water is safe to drink, the notice is there to ensure safety due to the possibility of contamination.
"Residents are advised to boil all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes. A rolling boil for one minute is sufficient. Alternatively, bottled water may be used," officials stated.
Businesses like Jeremiah's Italian Ice temporarily closed Sunday in three locations, including Bradenton, when the precautionary notice was first issued. Owner Jake Lopez said he wanted to make sure it was safe to serve his guests.
"We take this stuff serious," Lopez said. " If I know that this could affect people, even our staff, I'm not going to make a decision to put anyone in harm's way."
He said he was able to operate again Monday after the city stated his current filtration system was still safe to use, but recommended he change it once the notice is lifted.
The city of Bradenton says the following areas did not experience a pressure interruption and therefore are not affected by the boil water notice.
- Perico Bay
- Manatee Memorial
- Palma Sola
- Harbor Isle
- Harbor Isle Marina
