CLEARWATER, Fla. -- A man in a motorized wheelchair was fatally struck by a pickup truck on Missouri Avenue on Thursday.
The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. when James F. Thompson, 73, of Clearwater was crossing the 1200 block of South Missouri Ave. A commercial white pickup truck driven by William Whitehurst, 65, of Palm Harbor, which was traveling northbound on Missouri hit the wheelchair.
Clearwater officials say Whitehurst had a greenlight, and Thompson was in a crosswalk, but while the light was red.
Thompson was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg via helicopter where he later died.
