Man hiding from police dies in attic when temperature soars

Officials say a man hiding from police died in a De Bary attic where the temperature climbed above 100 degrees on Monday.

Fifty-seven-year-old Earle Herring was hiding in the attic of his sister's home. Mary Herring Donaldson says her brother probably wanted to avoid the police she called to the house. A judge had ordered Herring not to have contact with his sister after a May 23rd domestic battery charge. Volusia County sheriff's deputies arrived at three p-m, but no one answered a knock at the door. Donaldson called deputies back to the house around five p-m. Deputies found the attic door wedged shut. Once inside, they discovered Herring's body. Officials say the temperature inside the attic was more than 100 degrees. An autopsy determined that Herring died from either heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
