LIVE OAK, FLA. -- It was a foggy morning in July 2011 when Travis Thomas and Eric Suarez encountered the largest freshwater turtle in North America.
This Suwannee alligator snapping turtle was captured in the middle of the Suwannee River during a 3 year population study.
This particular species is the Macrochelys suwannensis, one of three kinds of alligator snapping turtles found in Florida. For more information on the "dinosaurs of the turtle world", click here.
