Lakeland Polk County Government Center cleared after 'HazMat' situation

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- The Lakeland Polk County Government Center had to be evacuated due to a 'HazMat' situation.

Polk County Fire Rescue's HazMat team responded to the situation around 2:32 p.m. to help the Lakeland Fire Department. The government center is located at 930 Parker Street East.

Around 16 people were exposed to an 'unknown substance,' according to the Polk County Board of County Commissioners.

No biological hazards were discovered, but all 50 occupants were went through precautionary decontamination. The FBI and Lakeland Police Department will be doing a further investigation.

There were no reported illnesses from the scene.

The Lakeland Polk County Government Center includes the following departments and offices: Lakeland courthouse, Property Appraiser offices, Clerk of Courts, County Probation, Public Defender, and Polk County Healthy Families.
