TAMPA, Fla. -- Mindhunter fans, the FBI agent behind your beloved crime series is coming to Tampa.

John Douglas, a retired special agent and unit chief in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, comes to USF on Nov. 8 as part of the university's Frontier Forum Lecture Series.

His book, Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, is the inspiration for the hit Netflix series Mindhunter.

The 1995 book follows two fictional agents who work to expand criminal science by exploring the psychology of murder.

Douglas began his career in the early 1970s as an FBI special agent after serving in the U.S. Air Force. Some of his early work includes teaching hostage negotiation and applied criminal psychology at the academy in Quantico, Virginia.

He then focused his efforts on better understanding criminal psychology, which led him to participate in interviews of active criminal investigations. Through these interviews, Douglas was able to make connections between patterns of criminal behavior.

His interviews and research, especially those of serial killers, helped innovate criminal investigation techniques.

Douglas' lecture is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required but seating is on a first-come, first served basis. Organizers warn that this lecture may feature graphic crime scene photos and is intended for adult audiences.
