VENICE, Fla. โ A couple in Port Charlotte braved Hurricane Milton to deliver their baby at a local hospital last week.
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System shared photos on Facebook of Kenzie Lewellen and Dewey Bennett III, who welcomed a baby boy on Oct. 9.
Lewellen began labor at home in Port Charlotte at 4 a.m. that day while Hurricane Milton was still raging. She was in labor for 4.5 hours before the couple decided to brave the storm and head to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice, according to the health care system.
The couple arrived safely at the hospital and Bennett breathed a sigh of relief, SMH said. Bennett previously lost his father who passed away during Hurricane Irma when ambulances were delayed.
The baby, named Dewey Lester Bennett IV, was delivered at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Baby Dewey is just one of seven babies born at Sarasota Memorial hospitals during Milton, the health care system said.
