Investigation launched after Pasco County deputy leaves gun in Burger King bathroom

Deputies found the missing handgun in a wooded area near Oelsner Street and Green Key Beach.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - The Pasco County Sheriff's Office is trying to figure out how a deputy's gun ended up left in a Burger King bathroom, leading to the arrest of a homeless New Port Richey man accused of finding and taking it Friday.

David Scott Haney, 49, is charged with one count of theft of a firearm. Authorities booked Haney into the Land O' Lakes Detention Center on $5,000 bond.

Deputies found the missing handgun in a wooded area near Oelsner Street and Green Key Beach.

The service revolver, which was left behind by mistake, was taken Friday between 11:29 a.m. and 12:16 p.m. from the restaurant at 6319 U.S. Highway 19 in New Port Richey.

The sheriff's office did not say if the deputy would face any kind of discipline for leaving the gun behind. But, a spokesperson confirmed an internal investigation began Monday and its findings were expected in a week or two.
