Water main break causes flooding in downtown Tampa

Repairs to the water main break have been completed and service to the line has been restored.

TAMPA, Fla. — A water main break flooded a major roadway in the downtown Tampa area.

The break began around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Ashley Drive at Whiting Street when it was caused by a contractor for the Pendry Tampa Residences working in the area, Daniel G. Hayes with Riverwalk Tower, LLC said in an email.

The contractor was reportedly installing foundation equipment when it moved a track-mounted rig over a sidewalk area inside the construction site.

Officials say the weight of the equipment broke an underground freshwater pipe, causing water to flow for about an hour over the Riverwalk and leading topsoil from the site into the Hillsborough River.

The break was later isolated and crews began working to pump water out of the street to start making repairs, which completed later in the evening.

Water services were not affected in the area, officials said.
