TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. — The Temple Terrace Fire Department announced one of their lieutenants unexpectedly died on Tuesday.
David Burton joined the department in 2015 and was Firefighter of the Year in 2016. He also served as a member of the Honor Guard.
"Dave's love for his job, his family, and his community was evident in all he did. His kindness and commitment left a lasting impact on the department and the many lives he touched," a news release read.
It is unclear how Burton died and department officials said they won't provide further details.
Burton was also known for turning discarded hoses into flags. He previously told 10 Tampa Bay he sometimes spent 12 hours a day on his day off crafting the patriotic keepsakes.
"Our agency is heartbroken over the passing of Lieutenant David Burton. He was a dedicated public servant to our community and will be deeply missed by our fire department family," Fire Chief Ian Kemp said in a statement.
