TAMPA, Fla. — Deputies arrested a Hernando County teen accused of posting an online bomb threat to "one or more schools" in Hillsborough County.
The threat, which read "'BOMB THE SCHOOLS,'" was posted to the social media platform X on Wednesday, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. The Hillsborough County Schools' profile page was tagged in the post.
Detectives say they determined a 14-year-old from Weeki Wachee High School was behind the threat. During the initial investigation, the teen admitted to posting the threat, stating that "he was disgruntled and 'hates everything' about school," the sheriff's office said.
The teen also reportedly told detectives he did not have a specific target in mind and chose Hillsborough County because he used to live and attend school there.
Detectives searched the teen's home and said they did not find any evidence of bomb-making materials nor any suspicious writings or drawings.
The teen is now charged with a false report of a bomb. The sheriff's office added he "received school discipline by school staff."
The investigation is ongoing.
