Teen arrested after trying to kidnap woman in Hillsborough Home Depot

The 16-year-old threatened the Home Depot shopper with a blade and led her to the bathroom before she ran away, deputies said.

RIVERVIEW, Fla. — A 16-year-old was arrested after he threatened a shopper and tried to abduct her in a Home Depot aisle.

The teen went into the store at 10150 Bloomingdale Avenue and tried to buy a gift card using a stolen card. After several unsuccessful attempts to complete the purchase, an employee tried to help but the teen just walked further into the store.

He then followed a shopper down several aisles and approached her. He told her he was having a bad day and allegedly threatened her with a blade, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The 16-year-old told her to follow him to the bathroom and act like she knew him and not ask for help. When they reached the bathroom, the woman saw customers and employees near her so she sprinted away and told people what happened. Multiple witnesses then saw the teen take off, according to deputies.

He was spotted across the street at another retail store a short time later where he was arrested.

"I can't imagine what would lead such a young individual to commit this crime," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "We are in awe of the victim's quick and brave thinking. Her courage in a terrifying situation not only saved her life but also helped ensure this dangerous suspect was arrested. I am thankful for the actions of the store employees and customers who assisted in this situation; their willingness to speak up is commendable and exemplifies the strength of our community."

The 16-year-old was charged with armed kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of someone's personal ID, fraudulent use of a credit card over $100 and possession of a stolen credit card.
