TAMPA, Fla. — A couple in Tampa is urging safety after finding what appeared to be an attempted break-in earlier this month.
Jose Ramos and his partner just secured the deal for their new home in the V.M. Ybor neighborhood. Days later, Ramos said he found a gunshot through his bedroom window and part of the bullet in the room. It had grazed the wall by the door.
"It's definitely a little shocking," Ramos said. "There's just a police officer's card sitting there on our door."
Ramos said no one was home that morning on Feb. 10 and he arrived hours after the incident.
Police officers responded quickly after detecting the gunshot through a radar, he said. A neighbor off North 12th Street said they had heard the incident and alerted Ramos that a man and a woman were seen walking away around 5 a.m.
"I'm hoping awareness brings this to a place where these things happen less," Ramos said.
Being present at the home, along with having multiple security and alarm systems and connections with neighbors gives Ramos ease despite the start of his move-in process.
"It's I think reassuring to be able to like just share this and make people aware," Ramos said of the security systems available.
Ramos said he hopes his story encourages others to take proper safety precautions for their own homes to help deter criminal activity.
