TAMPA, Fla. — A man is dead after he was hit by a driver while riding his bicycle in Tampa, police said in a news release.

The crash happened around 5:45 a.m. on West Waters Avenue near North Albany Avenue.

According to police, the man killed was in his early 40s. He was reportedly riding his bicycle on the sidewalk on the north side of Waters Avenue when he veered onto the roadway.

The man was then hit by the driver of a white Nissan pickup truck going westbound, knocking the man from his bicycle.

Officers say they tried to save the man's life, but he died from his injuries.

The pickup truck's driver stayed at the crash site and cooperated with officers during the investigation, police said. He will not be charged in this crash, officers added in the release, noting no criminal charges or citations were pending.

For about three hours, Waters Avenue was shut down between North Armenia Avenue and North Fremont Avenue but has since reopened.
