Here's why there's a lot of smoke over Tampa Bay today

TAMPA, Fla. — People in South Tampa and across Tampa Bay may notice a large amount of smoke Tuesday coming from MacDill Air Force Base. 

There's no need for alarm: The smoke is part of a controlled burn in preparation for the base's upcoming Tampa Bay AirFest 2024.

Called a "weekend packed with heart-pounding air performances," the annual event is set for March 29-30 and is expected to feature aerial demonstrations and other activities. Before the military and civilian aircraft take to the sky, crews must perform a prescribed burn of the airfield, according to MacDill's Facebook page.

"You know we are getting close, because it is time to facilitate a controlled burn of the airfield because we have a warthog that has promised to rain fire and havok across it," the base wrote.
